While the last post is accurate in pointing out what I believe to be a faulty assumptions in some economics work, it is also a bit of a downer. I think its important to note that there are, in fact, economists expanding on the notion of welfare without disregard for utility comparisons (Varian, Stiglitz, to name two). I think it is necessary to acknowledge the reality of inevitable value judgements, make these judgements transparent, and move on. We can't sacrifice reality for the convenience of a positive science.
