Also, did the debt aspect of the Avon ladies worry you? It definitely seems risky, and with so many women peddling lipstick, for every one that managed to put food in front of her kids, I wonder how many ended up worse off...

I wonder if the information that these ladies have about their neighbors' & friends' repayment could be leveraged where formal credit-bureaus are absent (i.e. most places)!

Yeah, it does seem a bit risky at points, especially here: "So if I want to keep my name in the clean I will do whatever it takes - sacrifice my commission, use my family money, even borrow from loan sharks to pay Avon." It's sort of an opportunity to let women take on some of the risk of their neighbors, given that they have good information about them, but it certainly may not always end up so pretty.

NAJ is an economist friend.
