I've arrived in Senegal now... but still haven't written about Paris. It was awesome. I was there on my own, but with weeks of entertainment in this cultural city. I accidentally stayed at the most incredible cheap hotel in the entire city. My tiny room, which was on the 5th (really, 6th) floor without any elevator, had the most beautiful view of the city. It was just down the street from Place de la Bastille, the memorial circle of the stomping of Bastille, and directly across from a very old and beautiful church called St Paul- St Louis.
I spent the first day walking around Isle de la Cite and seeing Notre Dame. I went to evening mass there on Monday. It was a very traditional service, though a bit like being in a fishbowl since a throngs of people walked the circle of the church taking pictures of the mass. The second day I spent mostly at Musee d'Orsay, checking out the huge impressionist collection. Pretty crowded, but also awesome.
I really enjoyed immersing myself in the city, speaking with waiters and walking through bookstores. My french was pretty good and easily understood, even if I had to refute their ideas of what country my strange American/African accent sounded like.
