A recent skype conversation with a friend in Senegal resulted in a (bold?) comparison of Abdoulaye Wade to Hosni Mubarak.
Wade proposed changes to the constitution to lower the threshold of winning re-election, which appeared to pave the way for his son as a successor. Outrageous protests ensued at the appearance of a monarchy (I'm slightly outdated- protests were June 23) and eventually Wade announced the clause had been abandoned.
My friend's analogy: Mubarak and Wade are both octogenarians who have been (were in) power for too long, married western white women and are out of touch with their country.
She also told me that the electricity outages in Senegal have been terrible and have really obstructed businesses operations. In other news, Karim Wade is the Minister of Energy.
